Placencia Humane Society was formed in 1999 primarily to respond to the need for regular veterinary care on the Peninsula. Today, the Placencia Humane Society has expanded well beyond its original purpose and now offers temporary emergency shelter for stray and injured pets, no-interest loans to area residents who need help caring for their pets and spaying and neutering clinics for feral cats.

Lions club president Nita Marin led a delegation to Hong Kong for the 88th Annual Lions International Convention. When the results where announced the San Pedro Lions club was selected as the Lions Club of the Year, from 46,103 clubs in 193 countries.
